Reducing energy consumption in your home is beneficial not only for your wallet but also for the environment. By making small changes in the way you use your appliances and investing in energy-efficient products, you can significantly lower your energy consumption. Here are some ideas, big and small, to help you get started.

Choose Energy-Efficient Appliances
When shopping for new appliances, look for models with energy-efficient labels, such as ENERGY STAR. These appliances are designed to use less energy and often come with features that optimize performance and reduce wastage. Our KAM Sales team would be happy to help you find just the right fit for your home and your budget.

  • If you aren’t buying any new appliances, you can still save energy in the kitchen.
  • Unplug appliances if possible. Many appliances and electronics continue to draw power even when turned off. Unplug chargers, small kitchen appliances, and other devices when not in use. Alternatively, you can use power strips to easily turn off multiple devices at once.
  • Set the refrigerator temperature to the recommended levels (around 37°F for the fridge and 0°F for the freezer).
  • Use cold water settings and shorter cycles for laundry whenever possible. Air-dry clothes to save energy on drying.
  • Run the dishwasher only when it’s full and use the energy-saving or eco-friendly cycle.
  • Cover cooking pans/pots.
  • Reduce the number of times the refrigerator is opened.
  • Remove extra refrigerators/freezer.
  • Place the faucet lever on the kitchen sink in the cold position when using small amounts of water; placing the lever in the hot position draws hot water even though it may never reach the faucet.
  • Look for blue flames in natural gas appliances; yellow flames indicate the gas is burning inefficiently and an adjustment may be needed. If you see yellow flames, consult the manufacturer or your local utility.
  • Use a covered kettle or pan or electric kettle to boil water; it's faster and uses less energy.
  • Match the size of the pan to the heating element when cooking.
  • Use the microwave oven when possible.
  • Use small electric pans, toaster ovens, or convection ovens for small meals rather than your large stove or oven. A toaster or convection oven uses one-third to one-half as much energy as a full-sized oven.
  • Clean filters and coils on refrigerators and HVAC systems.
  • Descale kettles and coffee makers to keep them running smoothly.
  • Check seals on your refrigerator to ensure they are airtight.

By implementing these strategies, you can significantly reduce energy consumption in your home. These small changes can lead to big savings on your energy bills and contribute to a more sustainable future. Start with one or two changes and gradually incorporate more for maximum impact. Happy energy saving!
